Onward Travel for Southeast Asia: Proof of Onward Ticket for Thailand, Vietnam & More

Emily Victoria Travels cat ba vietnam backpacking Southeast Asia

If you’re planning a backpacking trip through Southeast Asia, one of the first things you’ll run into at airports or border checkpoints is the requirement for proof of onward travel. Even if you’re a British passport holder entering visa-exempt countries like Thailand or Vietnam, airlines and immigration officers may ask to see that you plan to leave the country before your visa or exemption expires.

As someone who’s done the Ha Giang Loop in Vietnam, explored Thailand solo, and hopped across Cambodia, I know firsthand that this requirement can be stressful, but there are simple hacks that make it easy for backpackers. If you’re planning your first backpacking trip to Southeast Asia I’ve created a Newbie Backpacker guide which covers everything you need to know and includes access to a huge spreadsheet with recommendations and itineraries.

Why Proof of Onward Travel Matters

Airlines and immigration authorities want to make sure you won’t overstay your visa exemption. This protects them from fines and ensures you’re following local laws.

Common examples where proof may be requested:

  • Checking in for your flight abroad
  • Landing at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport
  • Entering Vietnam, Cambodia, or Laos by bus

Travel Insurance I Always Recommend
Backpacking is full of surprises—sometimes the best adventures come with unexpected hiccups. That’s why I never travel without comprehensive travel insurance. On my trips across Southeast Asia, I relied on True Traveller for peace of mind, whether it was lost luggage, sudden illness, or unexpected flight changes. It’s easy to set up, and I love knowing I’m covered no matter where the journey takes me.

If you’re planning a trip, check out True Traveller here—it’s what I personally use and recommend for fellow backpackers.

Thailand Onward Travel Hacks

Visa-Free Entry

  • UK passport holders can enter Thailand for up to 60 days without a visa, extendable once for 30 more days.
  • Passport must be valid for 6+ months and have at least one blank page.

Proof of Onward Travel

  • Airlines may ask for a return flight or ticket out of Thailand.
  • If you don’t know your next stop, there are easy solutions:
    1. Refundable Flight Ticket – Book a cheap, refundable transport to a neighbouring country (Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia) through 12Go Asia, then cancel if you don’t use it.
    2. Onward Ticket Services – Websites like OnwardTicket.com issue temporary e-tickets accepted by airlines and immigration.

Vietnam Onward Travel Hacks

Visa Requirements

  • UK passport holders can enter Vietnam visa-free for up to 45 days, or apply for an e-Visa valid for 30 days.
  • Passport must be valid for at least 6 months.

Proof of Onward Travel

  • Airlines sometimes check before boarding, and immigration may ask for exit tickets.
  • Solutions for backpackers:
    1. Refundable Bus or Flight Ticket – Cheap and flexible.
    2. Travel Agencies – Many agencies sell a temporary outbound ticket specifically for visa-proof purposes.

💡 My Experience: I flew into Vietnam on a one-way ticket but had a cheap refundable bus booked from Vietnam to Cambodia ready just in case. I never got asked, and I got my money back.

Cambodia, Laos, and Beyond

  • Cambodia: Most nationalities need a visa on arrival; proof of onward travel is sometimes requested at land borders.
  • Laos: Visa on arrival is standard; having onward travel ready reduces stress. You will need to pay in cash for your visa.
  • Tips: Even if you’re not asked, always prepare just in case.

Onward Travel Tools & Services for SOutheast Asia

  1. Refundable Flights – Book cheap, refundable tickets through airlines or travel agencies.
  2. Onward Ticket Services – Temporary tickets accepted by airlines.
  3. Travel Agencies & Bus Companies – Book secure bus or train tickets across borders. For Cambodia I strongly recommend Giant Ibis buses as other bus companies can be dodgy.

FAQ

Q: Can I enter Thailand on a one-way ticket?

A: Yes, but airlines may ask for proof of onward travel. Refundable tickets or temporary onward services work perfectly.

Q: Do I need proof if I’m travelling overland?

A: Border checkpoints rarely ask, but it’s good practice to have something just in case. On my overland border crossing from Cambodia to Thailand I never got asked for proof of onward travel.

Q: What if I’m not a UK passport holder?

A: Check your government’s travel advice — requirements vary by nationality.

Q: What if I don’t know my next destination yet?

If you’re unsure where you’re heading after Thailand, Vietnam, or Cambodia, don’t worry — you don’t have to be stuck. Immigration and airlines just want proof that you’ll leave the country before your visa or visa-exemption period ends.

Here’s how to handle it:

  1. Refundable Onward Tickets – Book a cheap, refundable flight or bus ticket through a service like 12Go Asia. Once your plans are firm, you can cancel it and get your money back.
  2. Onward Ticket Services – Websites like OnwardTicket.com provide temporary tickets specifically for visa or airline checks. These tickets are fully legal and recognised at borders and by airlines.

💡 Pro tip from experience: When arriving by air into Vietnam, I booked a refundable bus on 12Go Asia from Vietnam to Cambodia that I never intended to take just in case. I never got asked for it at the border, and I got my money back — it’s an stress-free way to satisfy the rules while staying flexible.

Key Takeaways for Backpackers

  • Always have proof of onward travel ready, even if not asked.
  • Refundable tickets and onward ticket services make this easy.
  • Keep passports valid and check visa exemptions for each country.

Enjoy your Travels!
