If you’re visiting Airlie Beach whilst on a trip to Australia and trying to decide whether a scenic flight over the Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef is worth the money — the short answer is yes, absolutely.
This 60-minute scenic flight ended up being one of the most memorable experiences of my entire Australia trip. Seeing the Whitsundays from above gives you a completely different perspective — one you simply can’t get from a boat or the beach.
I booked the flight through Get Your Guide, and from take-off to landing, it felt like a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Taking Off from Airlie Beach
We took off from Airlie Beach and headed straight out over the open ocean. For the first part of the flight, we were flying above endless shades of deep blue — calm, quiet, and surreal from the air.
There was something incredibly peaceful about leaving the coastline behind and heading towards the Great Barrier Reef, knowing what we were about to see beneath us.

Flying Over the Great Barrier Reef
As we continued out over the ocean, the colour of the water slowly began to change. What had been deep blue suddenly turned into lighter shades, with coral formations and reef patterns becoming visible beneath the surface.
Seeing the Great Barrier Reef from the air really puts its scale into perspective. It’s vast, intricate, and unbelievably beautiful — and no two sections look the same.
Seeing Heart Reef from Above
One of the biggest highlights of the entire flight was seeing Heart Reef.
Perfectly shaped and sitting quietly in the middle of the reef, it honestly didn’t look real. Photos don’t do it justice — from above, it feels peaceful, almost emotional, knowing how iconic and fragile this part of the reef is.
It’s one of those moments where everyone on board just goes quiet.
The Whitsunday Islands, Whitehaven Beach & Hill Inlet
After flying over the reef, we made our way back towards the Whitsunday Islands — and somehow, the views just kept getting better.
Flying over Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet was unreal. The swirling white silica sand and bright turquoise water looked like a painting. Seeing it from above makes you understand why Whitehaven Beach is often ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the world.
This part of the flight alone would have made the experience worth it.
Sitting in the Co-Pilot Seat
One of the most unexpected parts of this experience was that I got to sit right at the front as co-pilot.
As someone who’s always been a bit of a plane enthusiast, this made the flight even more special. Having uninterrupted views, listening to the pilot talk through the route, and watching everything happen from the cockpit felt incredibly surreal.
If you ever get the chance to sit up front on a scenic flight — take it.
Is a Whitsundays Scenic Flight Worth It?
Without question, yes.
The 60 minutes flew by, but it’s an experience I’ll never forget. Seeing both the Great Barrier Reef and the Whitsundays from the air gives you a completely new appreciation for just how beautiful this part of Australia really is.
If you’re visiting Airlie Beach and choosing one unforgettable experience — this is the one I’d recommend every single time.
