When I first started backpacking, I was nervous. Like, really nervous. I wasn’t sure if I’d packed the right things, how I’d navigate language barriers, or whether I’d be able to navigate my way around each country. In fact, the weeks leading up to leaving I wasn’t sure of myself and my decision to go travelling at all. But Southeast Asia— specifically Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and beyond (shoutout to the lovely locals in the Addu Atoll)—welcomed me with open arms, and honestly? I can’t think of a better region for first-time backpackers to begin their adventures.
If you’re considering booking that one-way ticket but need a little push, here are 7 reasons exactly why Southeast Asia is the best place to start your backpacking journey.
1. It’s Super Budget – Friendly
Let’s be honest: most newbie backpackers are on a budget. And Southeast Asia delivers incredible value. We’re talking £1.50 street food meals, £10-15 guesthouses, and overnight buses that double as your accommodation and transport.
You can live well here without blowing through your savings. And if you’re anything like I was—eating out every day without guilt—you’re going to love it.
2. It’s Incredibly Backpacker-Friendly
There’s a well-worn backpacker trail running through Southeast Asia, and that’s actually a good thing. It means you’ll find:
- Plenty of hostels (with social vibes or quiet corners, depending on your mood)
- Easy transport connections between cities and countries
- Tons of travel agencies that can book buses, ferries, tours, and treks for you
- Other solo travelers doing the exact same thing as you
Even if you’re not the most seasoned traveller, Southeast Asia makes the whole experience feel less intimidating.
3. The Culture Shock Is Gentle (But Eye-Opening)
Southeast Asia offers a beautiful balance: it’s different enough to feel exciting and immersive, but not so different that it’s overwhelming.
You’ll ride tuk-tuks, sip fresh coconut water, explore golden temples, and haggle in markets—but you’ll also find decent Wi-Fi, English signage in most tourist areas, and people who are used to helping travellers navigate their way.
4. The Food Is Unreal
If you’ve never slurped a bowl of pho on a tiny plastic stool in Hanoi or devoured pad Thai from a sizzling Bangkok street cart, you’re in for a treat. Southeast Asian cuisine is flavorful, fresh, and budget-friendly.
And if you have dietary requirements (I’m vegan!), many places are happy to accommodate—especially if you learn a few local phrases to help.

5. Nature, Cities, Culture, Beaches—It Has It All
In just a few weeks, you can go from:
- Trekking through rice terraces in northern Vietnam
- Chilling on white-sand beaches in the Thai islands
- Exploring ancient temples in Cambodia
- Drinking coffee in colonial cities like Luang Prabang
The variety is insane—and every country feels like its own world. You’ll never get bored.
6. It’s Easy to Meet People
Whether you’re staying in a dorm, hopping on a group tour, or just hanging out at a café, Southeast Asia is full of other travellers—many of them also solo or on their first trip.
We met some of my great people whilst travelling , just by saying hi over card games or hostel breakfasts. You don’t need to be extroverted—you just need to be open.
7. It’ll Change You—in the Best Way
I don’t say that lightly. Backpacking Southeast Asia taught me how to be independent, spontaneous, and confident in ways I didn’t expect. It challenged my assumptions and introduced me to perspectives I’d never considered. It was the best thing I’ve ever done.
It’s not just about ticking countries off a list. It’s about growth. And Southeast Asia gives you the space—and the magic—to do just that.
