The Best Vegan Food I Ate in Vietnam And Where to Find It

Vegan restaurants in Vietnam

Vietnam is an absolute dream for backpackers: vibrant cities, dramatic landscapes, and some of the cheapest travel in Southeast Asia. But what’s it like travelling the country as a vegan?

Spoiler: it’s totally doable—but not always effortless.

During my backpacking trip through Vietnam, I managed to eat incredibly well (most of the time), found a few plant-based gems I still dream about, and also had a few days where I survived almost exclusively on tofu and rice. If you’re vegan and planning a trip to Vietnam, here’s what I discovered—plus my favourite spots from Hoi An to Cat Ba Island.

🥢 Eating Vegan in Vietnam: What to Expect

Let’s start with the honest truth: eating vegan in Vietnam is easier in some places than others. In bigger cities and tourist hotspots like Hoi An, Nha Trang, and Hanoi, you’ll find dedicated vegan restaurants and English-friendly menus. There’s often at least one vegan option on most menus, even if the restaurant isn’t fully plant-based.

But go rural—like on the Ha Giang Loop—and you’ll quickly realise tofu, rice, and stir-fried morning glory are your best mates. The loop was by far the trickiest stretch, but even then I got by.

Overall, I found myself leaning more toward Western-style vegan cafés than local food joints, partly because traditional Vietnamese cuisine leans heavily on fish sauce and meat. And honestly? I didn’t love the local food in Vietnam as much as I did in Thailand. Still, I found some absolute gems. Here are the best of them.

🌿 Hoi An: Hidden Vegan Havens in the Lantern-Lit City

The Seeds

Tucked away on a quiet back street, this was one of the most calming places I ate in Vietnam. The food is beautifully plated, fresh, and wholesome—think colourful traditional dishes, and homemade sweet treats that make you remember how much you miss eating chocolate.

Kurumi

With locations in both Hoi An and Da Nang, Kurumi is a brilliant go-to for reliable, satisfying vegan fare. Their vegan pancakes and pastas are some of the best vegan food I’ve had, and their smoothies were perfect fuel for a hot day of exploring. The space is also super peaceful—ideal if you need a break from the crowds.

🌱 Nha Trang: Beach Days and Mac & Cheese

iVegan

This place is a godsend if you’re craving variety. With locations across Vietnam, iVegan has a full plant-based menu with everything from smoothie bowls to Asian fusion and hearty curries. The interior is light, bright, and packed with wellness vibes—think chilled minimalism and lots of greenery.

Mr. Mac

Not a vegan restaurant, but their vegan mac and cheese deserves its own spotlight. Creamy, comforting, and exactly what I didn’t know I needed after weeks of stir-fried veg. If you’re in Nha Trang and want a break from rice, this is the move.

🍲 Ha Giang City: A Pre-Loop Comfort Stop

Top of the Loop Restaurant

If you’re about to do the Ha Giang Loop, this spot in Ha Giang City is a must. It’s not fully vegan, but they have surprisingly great vegan options, including Western dishes if you’re craving a taste of home before heading into the mountains. Super friendly staff too.

🥞 Cat Ba Island: Pancakes and Plant Power

Celery Vegan Restaurant

A laid-back spot on Cat Ba Island that serves a range of plant-based meals. My personal favourite? Their vegan pancakes—crispy-edged and fluffy, the perfect brunch after a morning swim. The vibe here is relaxed, with mismatched tables and friendly service, making it a great place to refuel.

🌍 Final Thoughts: Is Vietnam Vegan-Friendly?

Short answer: yes—with a bit of planning.

Vietnam won’t always be as easy as Thailand for vegan travel, especially once you leave the major cities. But there’s still an impressive number of plant-based restaurants, and you’ll often be able to make it work even when options are limited. Tofu and rice might get a little repetitive, but you’ll never go hungry.

If you’re backpacking Vietnam and plant-based, my advice is to save your big meals for cities, stock up on snacks for the road, and don’t be afraid to eat Western-style now and then. Your gut—and your mood—will thank you.
